Customer Communication Strategies

The Key To Your Ultimate Success

Communications strategies are big-picture plans supported by a series of specific tactics to meet your goals. Social media campaigns, regular use of surveys, consultative selling, client education and knowing how to follow up are all strategies you should learn and use as you climb the corporate ladder.

Consultative Selling
Consultative selling is a relationship-based form of sales, requiring you to learn as much as you can about your customer and become a true partner. This communications strategy differs from the “smile and dial” strategy of sales, which consists of tactics such as offering discounts or freebies in order to book sales. This strategy includes making suggestions the customer might not have thought of, rather than simply explaining your products and prices when he calls.

Social Media Campaigns
Creating a social media strategy is an effective way to communicate with your customers, and can include using Facebook and Twitter to provide regular informational updates on your products while getting customers to recommend them to their friends. A Facebook business page allows you to provide valuable news and information to potential customers without spamming their inbox with emails or spending money on frequent mailings. Use Twitter to send quick pieces of information, such as a restaurant special, sale dates or other opportunity, quickly and without taking much customer time.

Ongoing, Post-Sale Client Service
An effective client communication strategy includes regular post-sale contact with customers to make sure they have received what they ordered, are using it properly and are aware of any other updates or benefits you offer. Don’t wait until a customer calls with a complaint -- follow up on sales with telephone calls or emails to determine if the customer has everything she needs. Send surveys using a free online tool, such as SurveyMonkey, to solicit feedback, and respond to any customer complaints or suggestions. Make one or two personal contacts during the year, such as a birthday greeting or congratulations on an achievement they have published in industry trade publications. If the only time your customer hears from you is when you are trying to sell them something, you have not created an effective customer service strategy.

Customer Education
Use an education strategy to make sure your customers know all of the benefits of your product or service and give them suggestions for using what you sell for maximizing its benefit. Don’t limit your educational efforts to pre-sales pitches. Hold lunch-and-learns to teach the marketplace how to improve their businesses with your product. A newsletter is an excellent way to educate your customers; include case studies showing how some of your customers are using your product in innovative ways. Write articles for trade publications and speak at conferences to help potential clients succeed with your type of product or service.

Dedicated Customer Service Reps
Assign a specific customer service representative to each customer as one communications strategy to increase client satisfaction. Customers become frustrated when they have to guess who they need to talk to at your company or spend several minutes with your answering machine trying to connect with a live person. Assign a single customer service contact to each client and make sure customers have a direct phone extension and email address they can use to quickly contact their rep. Teach each dedicated CSR about the client's history and needs so they can provide better customer service.
