Effective Work Team

How To Measure It

A team of employees working on a project is only as effective as its least-productive member. Determining how successful a team is can be achieved when you determine the group's purpose and gauge how quickly and accurately they realize goals you have set. Doing so can also help you learn which team members are leaders, supporters and perhaps even slackers. Use this information to motivate, reward or improve your team's efforts.

Step 1
Establish objectives. According to a 2012 Gallup poll, only a little more than half of employees surveyed feel that their job descriptions are well defined. Team members who are uncertain of what is expected of them will struggle to meet those expectations, so be sure that your employees know the purposes and duties of their positions.

Step 2
Set small goals as well as large ones. While the final result of a team project will help measure effectiveness, milestones along the way can pinpoint issues that may make employees less efficient. Make sure goals are measurable and that employees understand the steps necessary to reach them.

Step 3
Assign roles. Just as comprehending goals and objectives can help determine effectiveness as well as concerns, appointing specific tasks and responsibilities to individual team members can both improve employee focus and shed light on potential problems.

Step 4
Hold people accountable. Determine consequences for work not completed on time or correctly and follow through with those penalties every time. An effective team will rise to the occasion, while a less-productive group is likely to struggle with the liabilities.

Step 5
Assess progress. Use a variety of methods to measure how effective your team has been. Ask them to evaluate themselves as well as the others on their team. Analyze difficulties, determine whether goals were obtained in a timely and accurate manner, and judge overall performance for individuals and the team as a whole.
