Groups In Companies

And Its Importance

Work groups within companies, also called task forces, are teams of employees brought together to accomplish a specific task.

Take Advantage of Diverse Skills

How a work group is selected affects how it will contribute to the company’s success. The business owner or other manager in charge of selecting the group must understand the skill sets that are required to perform the research and analysis for the project and come up with a useful solution. Work groups are often composed of individuals from various departments.

Value of Consensus Opinion
The work group should have a free and open exchange of ideas and views as the project moves forward. Initially there may be significant disagreement about the course of action that should be recommended by the group.

Foster Lines of Communication
Even in small companies there are natural barriers between departments. Individuals from the accounting department for example may not regularly communicate with those in the sales department. Work groups allow these barriers to be broken down and a spirit of teamwork across departments is fostered. Friendships may even be forged in the course of working on the group assignment.

Sense of Urgency
The very fact that the small business owner has called the work group together creates an understanding among the team members that the project is important to the company’ success. They will have a sense of urgency to complete the project on schedule and put forth a maximum effort.

Encourage Expression
Although a work group leader may be appointed either by the business owner or by a vote of the group members, the lines of authority that each individual is used to working under are loosened in the course of conducting the project. This can encourage individuals to participate in discussions and contribute ideas more than they do in the normal course of their job. Participation in work groups can build employees’ confidence.

Re-energize Employees
Employees benefit from the fresh challenge of the work group assignment outside the normal job routine. Working with different people can be stimulating. The work group tasks may allow employees to demonstrate knowledge and skills to the company's owner that previously were not utilized.
